Sri Lanka: Serendipity by the Sea

Sri Lanka is often referred to by its nickname Serendib, which translates to “Island of the Sinhala”. The name also has association with the word ‘serendipity’, a fitting tribute to a destination that is such a captivating canvas of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. A nearly 1,600-kilometre long palm fringed coastline, verdant paddy fields and tea gardens; and raw wilderness areas, ensure a plethora of options in Sri Lanka. Whether you’re hiking through tea plantations, meditating in a centuries-old monastery, or simply soaking up the tropical sun, Sri Lanka offers it all. The compact island nation offers world-class accommodations that cater to every interest and every destination; be it nestled in dense forests, along the seaside or in the heart of any of Sri Lanka’s cosmopolitan cities.

Water sports enthusiasts can find plenty to do: Windsurfing, kayaking, water skiing, take your pick! If all you want to do is work at getting that perfect tan, then the golden beaches of Mirissa, for instance, offers this as well. Sri Lanka offers some of the best diving. The coral reefs around Galle harbour, home to a multitude of exotic fish, also offer a chance to explore ship wrecks—old and new—redefining the diving experience.

One of the oldest civilisations in the world, Sri Lanka’s written history goes back over 2,550 years. Explore ancient cities like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa that showcase majestic ruins and sacred temples, making it a fascinating landscape that evokes past grandeur. Eat like the locals at the bustling markets and family run eateries; or indulge at any of the fine dining restaurants that serve the best local seafood available.

Yala and Udawalawe National Parks, which are home to leopards, elephants and countless bird species, offer inimitable wildlife experiences. Sri Lanka is situated along the migratory routes of many species of whales, including blue whales, sperm whales and a variety of dolphins, making it the perfect vantage point for whale watching.

The best time to visit Sri Lanka is generally considered to be between December and mid-April.
